On 28 September 30 members and friends (a capacity crowd) participated in a wine trophy appreciation dinner at Fare Nosh Restaurant in Summer Hill. A number of Australian wines that were awarded trophies at the London International Wine Challenge were tasted. In addition, a unique (to Australia) mystery wine kindly brought by special guest, Judith Kennedy, CEO of Boutique Wines of Australia and Director of the Tri Nations wine challenge was tasted. This wine is a Blaufränkisch 2008 from Hanhdorf Estate. Handdorf Estate is the only producer of this popular Austrian wine in Australia. The wines were complemented by a three course meal designed by Fare Nosh Host and Chef, Peter Meijer.
Wines tasted were a Seppeltsfield Clara Blanca �Amontillado DP 116, Yalumba Viognier Eden Valley 2008 London International Wine Challenge (LIWC) Eden Valley Viognier Trophy (2009 award), Pauletts Aged Release Riesling 2005 LIWC Clare Valley Riesling Trophy (2010 award), Petaluma 2007 Coonawarra Cabernet Merlot LIWC Trophy: Coonawarra Trophy (2010 award), Blaufränkisch 2008 Trophy / Top of Class / Gold Medal - Australian Boutique Wine Awards 2010, Kayena Vineyards Tamar Ridge Botrytis Riesling Limited Release 2007 LIWC Trophy: Great Value Sweet Wine between £10 and £15 (2010 award), and a Campbells Classic Rutherglen Muscat LIWC Trophy::Great Value Fortified Wine between £10 and £15 (2010 award)
This type of function has been well received by members. The night was a intermingling of good wines and food, great company, a relaxed atmosphere, a modicum of education and a touch of competition in two quizzes. One participant staggered out with a huge box containing 8 Riedel Magnum glasses!
